Oh yeah, dawg - we get Idol here. And I'm stoked. The top 24 is better as a whole than any I've seen. Last night's guys' performance was grand.
Bottom 2, if America has ANY clue: Luke - so much of an Orlando Bloom look-alike that even Mia said, "He looks like the Pirates of the Caribbean guy!" Cute, but bad song and bad performance. Garrett: Leif Garrett (WHAT? I had no idea his first name was his doppleganger's LAST Name!?) lookalike (or Frampton, as he stated) picked a good song but didn't sing it well. He's much too green for this show. Bye bye gaunt one.

Couldn't have put it better myself, kid. And 17-year-old David WILL be a star, he was my favorite, and another one in the top 3 (with aforementioned Michael) is Jason Castro, dreadlock mon. What a cutie pie! I wonder if they'll try to make him cut off his dreads at some point. Stunning face and unique style - and great song choice.
I'm also loving this fans vs. favorites Survivor (which I thought had jumped the shark already), Californication (HELLO, Showtime, you ROCK - what a show!), the current and last season of the Wire, Friday Night Lights, and the Terminator series. What's on your viewing list?
On a final note, Apple TV - which we have and has saved us from many decent-tv-free AFN sucky nights - finally updated their software. We can rent HD movies, buy TV shows for pretty much nothing, and look at our flickr account on our 55" tv. Yay Apple!! We did also bring our TiVo - which DOES work here, so if you're coming over and you have one of your own (not the borrowed cable version thing) - bring it!

Our Daughter, Top Chef Judge
Craig & I love the show Top Chef. We were watching the latest season in the states before coming here, and when we figured out how to get it on iTunes, we did and we got to watch the rest. It's Bravo, so they bleep the 4-letter words the chefs say when they mangle or burn themselves or get into debates about whether to use squab or sea urchin. Mia ended up watching the show with us on occasion and making yummy sounds with me even though she wouldn't ever TOUCH most of the things they made.
This morning at breakfast she sat down and said, "Mama - serve me my breakfast like I'm a judge on Top Chef."
I snickered. "Ok."
Her choice today was Rice Kripsies (That is not a typo, she still says "kripsies" so I do too, and it's totally cute and no I will NOT be correcting her and she might not get a date with a boy because of it but what the heck is wrong with that anyway? I mean Craig & I figure if we don't tell her it's wrong to make body noises and talk about poop, she'll never get a date and we won't have to worry much about her in her teen years.) and I grabbed the bowl, a spoon, and the soy milk.
"Today we have a fresh serving of Rice Kripsies with a soy milk reduction which I will serve to you tableside." (She's sitting up straight and looking at me - DEAD serious - with her hands folded in her lap - listening intently.) I pour the milk in. "If you listen carefully during your meal, the Kripsies will talk to you. Enjoy your meal."
"Thank you, Chef Mommy," again, said in all seriousness. I walked behind the kitchen counter, and watched her lean over for a moment and put her ear to the bowl. She gave an impressed little nod, and delicately took the spoon off the table and dipped it into the bowl. She opened her mouth and ate the bite, chewing several times and nodding with a smirk. I looked at her as if to say, "so???" and she gave me a nod of approval and a big thumb's up. I love working on a local cooking show for a living.

Home Sweet Home
You've been so patient. We've been so busy organizing. Well, it's almost finished, so I thought that after we cleaned extra hard and organized extra hard for guests, a few pictures of the place would be in order.
Here's the right side of the kitchen (counter faces the dining room) - the cabinets are so high I have to use a stepstool to reach them, and we bought that kitchen cart on the end to make more pantry & counter space. That picture on the wall is one of only 3 pictures I was able to hang before I threw in the towel:
And the left (behind the fridge is the washer/dryer) - you can see how tight the counter space is! The obligatory espresso machine, rice cooker, microwave, and banana...haha.:
Living/dining room areas (borrowed dining room table & chairs, new folding chairs we bought, and area rug now in tact):

From the other angle (2 of the 3 pictures is in there as you can see):
The front entrance - our shoe rack which is perfect for Japan as everyone removes their shoes upon entering homes. On top of the rack you'll notice our Shiisaa and the hammer drill we borrowed from self help that we're returning because it just caused me to curse a lot:

Saw this little guy (about 1 1/2 or 2" long) behind our entertainment center. Hope he got out ok....
Here is me! Yes, I can be in front of the camera too - looking at the extensive menu at Kitakaisen, a great new place we hit on Saturday night:
And Mia - literally shoving the rest of the mouthful of yakisoba in. Who'd have predicted that?
Ok, off to hopefully exchange the faulty part of our satellite TV setup - darn thing hasn't worked well since we got it. Now we have NOTHING - and with sports on the way, that's unacceptable. Still to come - pictures of Mia's haircut this afternoon at 3!

Is Anyone Watching This Gem??
Bless his heart, Craig has been downloading TV shows for us since our TV reception is intermittent and I'm not interested in watching repeats of The Biggest Loser and Hell's Kitchen.
We just finished So You Think You Can Dance (Thrilled about the results, and very sad the show is over), and are in the middle of the current season of Top Chef. He also found Mad Men- it airs on AMC, and it is a brilliant "dramedy" about ad men on Madison Avenue during 1960. They smoke like chimneys, the woman's role in the family and the office is insanely archaic and submissive, and the writing is some of the best I've seen on a new show for a very long time.
Matthew Weiner, a former executive producer & writer on The Sopranos, and really shines on this show because he's a fanatic about the time period and getting everything just right. Alan Taylor is one of the directors, who worked on Sopranos, Big Love, Sex and the City, Deadwood, and Rome. Heavy hitter. I'm not sure how AMC ended up picking up this show, but I do know it's available for purchase on iTunes, and if you're not willing to do that - wait for the repeats on AMC or rent it on DVD when it's released. Very interesting and worthy TV in a vast wasteland.
