Garbage - or Ice Cream?
I've been DYING to post this. There are a few things here that I want to post but can't seem to catch when I have my P&S handy (since it has a video camera). Today was the day.
Behold - the sounds of garbage collection day in Japan:
The regular trash truck is larger and looks like a white mini-version of an American garbage truck with a hibiscus flower painted on it. The engine is also almost silent, just the sounds of this same ice cream truck song. Imagine our disappointment when there were no bomb pops.

Okinawan Sledding
As Anne & I perused the Camp Lester gift shop a couple of weekends ago, Derek & the kids discovered a nearby hill. There were 2 boys there with pieces of cardboard, and as I came over to where they were playing, it came clear that the kids were having one heck of a time.
Derek said, "I'm not responsible for grass stains or anything like that!" and he quickly coined it "Okinawan Sledding". I just know I threw away the pants she wore that day because there were rips in the seat from all the sledding. No biggie, they were from Target & didn't owe us a thing. And her fun was well worth it!
I give you Nicholas, Mia & Logan:
They ran back up the hill so many times I was exhausted watching them. It was nearly dark out when we left - and if it weren't for the grown-ups whining about being hungry, they would've stayed!

Earthquake & Flying Pigs
Because so many asked, no, we didn't feel so much as a tremor yesterday morning during the 6.8 that hit northwestern Japan. Geography lesson: Tokyo (which was 160 miles from the epicenter, and yes - did feel it) is slightly closer to us than Dallas to San Diego. No - we won't feel an earthquake that far away. But thanks for your concern.
On the other hand, there IS something pretty earth-shaking going on in the Bowman home. Click here for video proof!
In other news, we stepped through water up to our calves today to get into the car - we had so much rain this morning, in the states it probably would've been a flash flood. Here's a shot of Mia in the back seat after we ran about 20 feet from the youth center to the car without an umbrella.
No - it wasn't 5 in the morning, and no, the windows aren't tinted - it REALLY gets that dark when storms come. And unlike the east coast summer storms- you can't just "wait it out", this constant downpour lasted from 7:40am until about 11am. It is kind of fun - I still like downpours! Just not having to be somewhere when they're happening. And having the right shoes, which today I did not.
And let me tell you, if my kid doesn't have the time of her life on this island, then it's her OWN darn fault- she's signed up for ballet, a 3-day gymnastics camp (and on a waiting list for the weekly class), soccer (which starts in September), and Saturday I'm signing her up for swim lessons. AND we bought her a snorkel set and beach shoes (hard soles for the coral) so we can snorkel together. I wonder which activity she'll love best! And I wonder how on earth I'm going to do all this when she's in kindergarten from 8-3 every day this fall!

We're Still Here!
Well, we survived Typhoon Man-Yi. We lost power from about 1pm until after 7pm. Along with almost 93,000 other homes on the island (about 1/6th of Okinawa). 27 were injured, mostly because they were outside and got knocked to the ground by the 100mph gusts. The wind howled on through late last night, but despite the air conditioners in both Mia's bedroom and ours being on the fritz now (yeah, great) we slept like proverbial babes after the fitful and loud night before.
Video of the wind, rain, waves & some dude across the street from us trying to secure something on his balcony can be seen here, here, and here.
Here's Craig on the balcony during our only lull in hard winds & rain (so it was just really windy and somewhat rainy - the eye never passed over us, it remained off-shore) taking pictures of the waves.
Our typhoon doors were shut on our double sliding doors in the living room. This definitely was a good thing.
The view to the east as the wind & rain pounded our window. The bars are on the east-facing windows to prevent flying debris from breaking them. Again, definitely a good thing.
One of the wave pictures Craig snapped; the white water was rushing almost completely horizontally - northward on the west coast. I'd never seen anything like it.
